Does Obsidian Have AI? What's Built In and How to Add It

Published 5 min read

On this page

No. The Obsidian app has no built-in AI: none of its core plugins writes, summarizes or chats with your notes. Its free Web Clipper browser extension has one optional AI feature, Interpreter, which runs on a model provider you connect yourself. Everything else comes from community plugins, and most of them are free to install.

So "Obsidian AI" means Obsidian plus an AI plugin. Obsidian stays a free note app that keeps your notes as Markdown files in a folder on your device; the plugin adds the AI and decides what it costs.

We make SystemSculpt, one of those plugins, so this guide names the free options too. Obsidian facts checked November 3, 2026, against Obsidian's help and pricing pages; SystemSculpt steps match version 6.18.10.

The short answers

  • Is Obsidian AI-powered? No. Obsidian is a Markdown editor with links, search, graph view and plugins. AI is an add-on.
  • Is Obsidian AI free? Obsidian is free, including for work. Most AI plugins are free to install; the AI itself runs on an account you already have, your own API key, a model on your computer, or the plugin's paid hosted plan.
  • Is it Mac only? No. Obsidian runs on macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android. Plugins that run Claude Code or Codex work on desktop only.
  • Does Obsidian have AI meeting notes? Not built in. The core Audio recorder plugin records audio into a note but doesn't transcribe it. Transcription takes a plugin; see how to transcribe audio in Obsidian.

Free ways to add AI

Pick the one that matches what you already have:

  • You already pay for Claude or ChatGPT. Run your own Claude Code or Codex inside Obsidian with SystemSculpt, Copilot, Claudian or Agent Client. The plugins charge nothing for this; the AI runs on your existing account. Desktop only.
  • You want related notes and no account. Smart Connections ships with a local embedding model and starts without an API key.
  • You want a model on your own computer. Local GPT runs Ollama or another OpenAI-compatible model through the AI Providers plugin.
  • You clip web pages. Turn on Interpreter in Web Clipper settings and connect a provider key or a local model. A template prompt such as {{"a summary of the page"}} adds the summary to the clipped note.

When you want AI on your phone, or hosted features such as transcription and PDF conversion, that part costs money. SystemSculpt gives eligible new accounts 500 one-time starter credits with no card, then costs $9 a month or $90 a year. Copilot Plus is $14.99 a month. Our full comparison of Obsidian AI plugins covers eight of them, and what Obsidian AI plugins cost has every price.

Add AI to Obsidian in 4 steps

These steps use SystemSculpt. Other plugins install the same way.

1. Install the plugin. In Obsidian, open Settings, then Community plugins. If you see Turn on community plugins, select it first. Select Browse, search for SystemSculpt, then select Install and Enable. Or open the SystemSculpt page in the Obsidian plugin directory.

2. Open chat. Select the chat icon in the left ribbon (Open chat), or run SystemSculpt AI: Open chat from the command palette.

3. Choose who answers. The run line below the message box shows the backend. On desktop, choose Claude Code or Codex if one is installed and signed in; that needs no SystemSculpt account or plan. Otherwise chat uses hosted SystemSculpt AI: select Start free to create a free account and claim the starter credits, or Sign in if you have one.

4. Pick a mode and ask. The mode decides what the AI may change. For hosted SystemSculpt, Ask asks before every change to your vault, Auto reads, creates and edits notes without asking but asks before moving or deleting, and Full access makes every change without asking. Claude Code and Codex have their own modes, such as Ask before edits and Read only. Then type @, pick a note and ask something you can check, such as "Summarize the decisions in this note."

Each chat is saved as a Markdown note in your vault, so the conversation stays with your notes.

What leaves your computer

Obsidian keeps your notes on your device unless you turn on a sync service. An AI plugin is different: the text it works on goes to the AI service it uses, unless the model runs on your computer.

With SystemSculpt, Claude Code and Codex send what they read to their own provider through your account. Hosted SystemSculpt AI goes through SystemSculpt's server, a model-routing service and model providers; the privacy policy has the details. Read each plugin's own policy before you point it at private notes.

Questions

Does Obsidian have built-in AI? No. Obsidian has no AI in the app itself. Its free Web Clipper extension has an optional AI feature, Interpreter, that uses a provider you connect.

Is there a free AI for Obsidian? Yes. Smart Connections and Local GPT can run on your own computer, and SystemSculpt, Copilot, Claudian and Agent Client can run Claude Code or Codex on an account you already have, with no plugin fee.

Can I use AI in Obsidian on iPhone or Android? Yes, with a plugin that runs on mobile. SystemSculpt's chat uses its hosted AI on a phone, since Claude Code and Codex run on desktop only.

Do I need to move my notes to an AI app? No. AI plugins work on the Markdown files already in your vault, and what SystemSculpt makes is saved there as Markdown too.

Install SystemSculpt free from the Obsidian plugin directory, or compare its plans if you want hosted AI.
