How to Summarize Notes in Obsidian With AI
On this page
Obsidian has no summarize button: the app has no built-in AI, so summaries take a plugin. With SystemSculpt, open chat, type @ to attach the note, and ask for a summary. It can also save the summary as a new note in your vault.
It's free if you already use Claude Code or Codex on desktop: SystemSculpt runs them in a chat pane with no SystemSculpt plan. Otherwise its hosted AI works on desktop and mobile, with 500 one-time starter credits for eligible new accounts. Free alternatives are below, including a local model and Obsidian's own Web Clipper.
We make SystemSculpt. The steps below match SystemSculpt 6.18.10, checked November 3, 2026.
Summarize one note
1. Install SystemSculpt. In Obsidian, open Settings, then Community plugins, then Browse. Search for SystemSculpt, then select Install and Enable. Or use the SystemSculpt page in the Obsidian plugin directory.
2. Open the note, then open chat. Select the chat icon in the left ribbon (Open chat), or run SystemSculpt AI: Open chat from the command palette. In the run line below the message box, choose Claude Code or Codex if you have one installed and signed in, or use hosted SystemSculpt AI.
3. Attach the note. Type @ and pick it, or select + and then Add current note. You can also open a file's menu and choose Chat with file. The note appears as a chip in the message box.
4. Choose a mode that fits. If you only want the summary in chat, pick a mode that changes nothing on its own: Read only for Codex, Plan only for Claude Code, or Ask for hosted SystemSculpt, which asks before every change to your vault. Then ask:
Summarize this note in five bullet points: the decisions, the open questions and anything with a date.
5. Save it, if you want. Ask "Write that summary to a new note called Design sync summary." In Ask mode, SystemSculpt shows the change and waits for your approval. Keep the summary in its own note, next to the original, so you can check it against the source.
Summarize a week of daily notes
Select +, then Add notes from vault…, and pick the days. Or name the folder and let the AI find them:
Read my daily notes from October 27 to November 2 in the Daily folder. Write a weekly review: what got done, what slipped and what's next, with a link to each day.
Claude Code and Codex read the files themselves, since they run in your vault folder. Hosted SystemSculpt can list, find, search and read notes in your vault, and the chat shows each tool it used, so you can see which notes it read.
Summarize a PDF
Open the PDF's file menu and choose Convert to Markdown. SystemSculpt saves the extracted text as a Markdown note beside the original. Then choose Chat with file on that note and ask for the summary. Check names, numbers and tables in the extraction first.
Conversion runs on SystemSculpt's hosted service and uses credits. It takes PDF, PNG, JPG and WebP files up to 25 MiB.
Summarize a YouTube video or a recording
Run Process YouTube video from the command palette and paste the link. Under Output, choose Detailed note, then Process video. You get a note with a summary, key points, decisions, action items and open questions, linked to a timestamped transcript.
For a recording or meeting, run Open audio processor, choose Audio, pick the file and choose Meeting brief. Both run on SystemSculpt's hosted service and use credits. How to transcribe audio in Obsidian covers the recorder and file transcription.
Thousands of notes? Leave them where they are
You don't need to import your vault into another AI app to get summaries. Your notes are already Markdown files, and an AI plugin works on them in place. Find the notes about one topic first, with search by meaning, then summarize that set or one folder at a time. A focused set gives a summary you can check; "summarize my whole vault" gives one you can't.

Check a summary before you use it
A summary can drop the one caveat that mattered, or state a proposal as a decision. Before you share one, check names, dates, numbers and who agreed to what against the source note or transcript. Ask the AI to quote the line behind each point when the stakes are high.
Questions
Can Obsidian summarize notes without a plugin? No. Obsidian has no built-in AI. Its Web Clipper extension can summarize web pages with Interpreter and your own model, but not notes already in your vault.
Is there a free way to summarize notes in Obsidian? Yes. SystemSculpt runs your own Claude Code or Codex with no plugin fee, and Local GPT summarizes selected text with a model on your computer.
Can I summarize notes on my iPhone? Yes, with hosted SystemSculpt AI. Claude Code and Codex run on desktop only.
Will the AI change my note? Only if your mode allows it. Choose Read only, Plan only or Ask before you send, and ask for the summary in a new note.
