Text Generator vs SystemSculpt: Prompt Templates or AI Chat (2026)

Published 6 min read

On this page

Pick Text Generator if you want reusable prompt templates that write text into your notes, free and open source, on your own API key for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini and others, or on a local model through Ollama. Pick SystemSculpt if you want an AI that chats with your vault and edits notes, using your own Claude Code or Codex on desktop or hosted SystemSculpt AI on desktop and mobile, plus audio transcription, with chats and transcripts saved as Markdown in your vault.

We make SystemSculpt. Everything below about Text Generator comes from its own README, listing and source code, linked at the end. Facts and prices checked November 3, 2026.

Where Text Generator fits better

Text Generator is a template engine for AI writing. You write a template once, or pick one from its community template library, and run it on the note you're in to generate a title, summary, outline or paragraphs. Commands insert the result at your cursor, copy it, or create a new note, and a batch command runs a template over search results. Templates can pull in context from PDFs, web pages, images, YouTube transcripts and embedded audio.

It runs on the provider you choose, with your own API key or a local model through Ollama, and the plugin itself is free with no paid plan. It is also much more widely used: about 593,000 downloads against SystemSculpt's 38,809. Its last stable release, 0.8.7, came out on April 27, 2026.

Choose Text Generator if you want repeatable writing templates, your own API key or a local model, and no subscription of any kind.

Where SystemSculpt fits better

SystemSculpt is for when you want to talk to an AI about your vault and have it do the work, not fill in a template. Its chat reads the notes you attach or allow and writes back as files: on desktop through your own Claude Code or Codex with no SystemSculpt plan, or through hosted SystemSculpt AI on desktop and mobile. It also records voice notes and meetings in Obsidian, transcribes long audio to Markdown or SRT, turns a YouTube video into a note with a timestamped transcript, and shows Similar Notes.

The trade-offs: it doesn't run local models or your own API keys, its hosted features use credits, and it is the smaller plugin by downloads.

Choose SystemSculpt if you want chat that edits notes, transcription and related notes in one plugin, on desktop and mobile, with everything saved as Markdown in your vault.

Questions

Is Text Generator free? Yes. The plugin is free and open source under the MIT license, with no paid plan. You pay your AI provider for API usage, or nothing if you run a local model through Ollama.

Does Text Generator work with Claude? Yes, through Anthropic's API with your own key. It doesn't connect a Claude subscription or Claude Code; SystemSculpt runs your installed, signed-in Claude Code on desktop.

Can SystemSculpt use my own API key or a local model? No. SystemSculpt chat runs your own Claude Code or Codex, or hosted SystemSculpt AI. For your own key or a local model, Text Generator is the better choice.

Which one transcribes audio? Both, in different ways. Text Generator sends embedded audio files up to 24 MB to a Whisper provider with your key and uses the text as template context. SystemSculpt records in Obsidian and turns long audio or a YouTube video into a Markdown note with a timestamped transcript, on its hosted service with credits.

What does SystemSculpt cost? It's free to install, and desktop chat with your own Claude Code or Codex needs no SystemSculpt plan. Eligible new accounts can claim 500 one-time starter credits for hosted AI with no card. Paid plans are $9 a month or $90 a year.

Can I use both? Yes. They don't conflict: you can keep Text Generator for templates and use SystemSculpt for chat and audio.
