Reflect vs SystemSculpt: Open-Source Notes App or AI in Obsidian (2026)

Published 6 min read

On this page

Pick Reflect if you want a simple notes app that opens to today's note, keeps everything in a folder of Markdown files, and adds optional AI through your own OpenAI, Anthropic, Google or OpenRouter API key, free on Mac. Pick SystemSculpt if you already use Obsidian, or want to, and want an AI that chats with your notes and edits them, using your own Claude Code or Codex on desktop or hosted SystemSculpt AI on desktop and mobile, plus audio and YouTube transcription and PDF conversion.

They are different kinds of product. Reflect is a notes app, closer to Obsidian itself. SystemSculpt is a plugin for Obsidian, a free notes app, so using it means using Obsidian. This page covers the current Reflect app, the open-source rewrite; Reflect Classic, the older cloud app, is still maintained for its users. We make SystemSculpt. Everything below about Reflect comes from its own site, README, release and App Store listing, linked at the end. Facts and prices checked November 3, 2026.

"Not listed" means Reflect's own site, README and App Store listing don't describe the feature as of the check date. SystemSculpt's downloads are the Obsidian directory total and include automatic updates.

SystemSculpt is free to install. Monthly is $9/mo; Yearly is $90/yr.

Where Reflect fits better

Reflect is a smaller, calmer app than Obsidian. It opens to today's note, links ideas with [[wiki links]] and backlinks, and keeps every note as a Markdown file in a folder you choose. You sync it with iCloud Drive or a git repository you control, and it needs no Reflect account.

Its AI runs on your own API key, so you pay your provider directly for what you use, and semantic search can run on your device. Notes marked private: true are kept out of AI and other outside services. A Chrome extension saves links, selected text and screenshots, and a command-line tool lets scripts and agents read your notes. The whole app is open source under the MIT license, and it's free on Mac.

Choose Reflect if you want a simple daily-notes app on plain files, you'd rather bring your own API key, or you want local semantic search at no cost.

Where SystemSculpt fits better

SystemSculpt is for people who use Obsidian and want the AI to do work in their vault. Its chat reads the notes you attach or allow and writes back as files: on desktop through your own Claude Code or Codex with no SystemSculpt plan and no API key, or through hosted SystemSculpt AI on desktop and mobile. It also transcribes audio files to Markdown or SRT, turns a YouTube video into a note with a timestamped transcript, and converts PDFs to Markdown.

Obsidian runs on Android as well as iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows and Linux, and SystemSculpt's hosted AI works on all of them. Reflect lists no Android app, and its iPhone and iPad app needs a subscription.

Choose SystemSculpt if you work in Obsidian, want chat that edits notes rather than a writing helper, or want transcription and PDF conversion without setting up providers.

Can you use both?

Yes, more easily than most pairs. Both keep notes as Markdown files with [[wiki links]], so the same folder can be a Reflect graph and an Obsidian vault. Back the folder up first, since the two apps may lay out new files differently.

Questions

Is Reflect free? On Mac, yes: the app is free and needs no account. The iPhone and iPad app needs Reflect Pro, $9.99 a month or $99 a year on the US App Store. AI features use your own API key, and your provider bills you for them.

Is Reflect open source? Yes. The current Reflect app is open source under the MIT license, on GitHub as reflect-open. Reflect Classic, the older cloud app, is a separate product that is still maintained.

Does Reflect work with Obsidian? Both apps read and write Markdown files with [[wiki links]], so you can open a Reflect folder in Obsidian as a vault. Reflect has no Obsidian plugin.

Can I use my own API key in SystemSculpt? No. SystemSculpt runs your installed, signed-in Claude Code or Codex on desktop, or hosted SystemSculpt AI. If you want to bring your own API key, Reflect fits that better.

What does SystemSculpt cost? It's free to install, and desktop chat with your own Claude Code or Codex needs no SystemSculpt plan. Eligible new accounts can claim 500 one-time starter credits for hosted AI with no card. Paid plans are $9 a month or $90 a year.

Do I keep my notes if I stop using either one? Yes. Both keep notes as Markdown files in a folder on your device. SystemSculpt's chats, transcripts and converted documents are Markdown notes too, so they stay if you cancel or uninstall.
