Smart Composer vs SystemSculpt: Obsidian AI Chat Compared (2026)

Published 6 min read

On this page

Pick Smart Composer if you want AI chat in Obsidian on your own API key or a local model, free, with edits it suggests and you apply in one click. Pick SystemSculpt if you want chat that runs your own Claude Code or Codex on desktop or hosted SystemSculpt AI on desktop and mobile, plus audio transcription, YouTube-to-note and PDF conversion, with chats and transcripts saved as Markdown in your vault.

We make SystemSculpt. Everything below about Smart Composer comes from its own README and plugin listing, linked at the end. Facts checked November 3, 2026.

SystemSculpt is free to install. Monthly is $9/mo; Yearly is $90/yr.

Where Smart Composer fits better

Smart Composer works with almost any model. Add an API key from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Groq, DeepSeek or OpenRouter, point it at any OpenAI-compatible service, or run a model on your own computer with Ollama or LM Studio for free, offline use. Keys stay on your device.

Its chat is built for writing. Type @ to pick the notes or folders it should read, add a web page, an image or a YouTube link, and it suggests changes to your document that you apply with one click. Vault Search finds the notes most relevant to your question, and MCP connects outside tools. Prompt templates and your own system prompt make repeat jobs quick.

It is free, MIT licensed and has about 178,000 downloads against SystemSculpt's 38,809.

Choose Smart Composer if you want your own API keys or local models, you want to see each edit before it lands, or you want to pay nothing beyond your AI provider.

Where SystemSculpt fits better

SystemSculpt is under active development, with releases most weeks; Smart Composer's README says it is maintained by one developer and is not under active development, and its last release was January 26, 2026.

SystemSculpt also runs coding agents. On desktop it uses your installed Claude Code or Codex in the vault folder, under that agent's own login, with no SystemSculpt plan. Smart Composer can connect a Claude subscription, but its README warns that reports exist of Claude accounts being banned or restricted when a subscription is used that way.

And it handles audio and documents: it records voice notes and meetings in Obsidian, transcribes audio files to Markdown or SRT, turns a YouTube video into a note with a timestamped transcript, and converts PDFs and images to Markdown.

Choose SystemSculpt if you want Claude Code or Codex in Obsidian, transcription, YouTube and PDF notes in one plugin, or a plugin that is still getting new releases.

Can you use both?

Yes. They install side by side and work on the same Markdown files. You could keep Smart Composer for a local model or your own key, and use SystemSculpt for Claude Code, audio and PDFs.

Questions

Is Smart Composer free? Yes. Smart Composer is free and MIT licensed. You pay your AI provider for usage, or nothing if you run a local model with Ollama or LM Studio.

Is Smart Composer still maintained? Its README says it is maintained by a single developer and is not under active development, with occasional updates or fixes. Its latest release, 1.2.9, came out on January 26, 2026, and the README links a list of community forks.

Does SystemSculpt work with local models or my own API key? No. SystemSculpt chat runs your own Claude Code or Codex, or hosted SystemSculpt AI. For local models or your own keys, Smart Composer is the better choice.

Can I use Claude Code with Smart Composer? Not as an agent. Smart Composer can connect your Claude account, but its README warns of reports of Claude accounts being banned or restricted that way. SystemSculpt runs your installed Claude Code itself, on desktop.

What does SystemSculpt cost? It's free to install, and desktop chat with your own Claude Code or Codex needs no SystemSculpt plan. Eligible new accounts can claim 500 one-time starter credits for hosted AI with no card. Paid plans are $9 a month or $90 a year.

Do I keep my notes if I stop using either plugin? Yes. Your notes stay Markdown files in your vault either way. SystemSculpt's chats, transcripts and converted documents are Markdown notes too, so they stay if you cancel or uninstall.
