Markdown symbols out. Plain text left.

Paste Markdown or open a .md file and get the plain text: no #, **, [links]() or table pipes, but the paragraphs, lists and tables still read clearly. Ready for a form, a message or a word count.

What it does

Just the words.

Want to keep the formatting instead? Copy it formatted from the Markdown viewer, or tidy the Markdown itself with the Markdown formatter. The SystemSculpt plugin for Obsidian is free to start; pricing shows what the paid plans add.

Every symbol out
Headings, bold, italics, code marks, link brackets, images and HTML tags are removed and their words kept.
Still readable
Lists keep a bullet or number, tables become lined-up columns, and paragraphs keep one blank line between them.
Obsidian notes too
Wikilinks become their text, ==highlights== and callouts keep their words, %%comments%% and front matter are left out.

Questions.

How do I remove Markdown formatting?

Paste the Markdown or open the .md file. The plain text appears beside it at once. Choose Copy plain text, or Download .txt.

What happens to links?

By default a link becomes its text. Choose Links: Text (URL) to keep each address in brackets after its text, so nothing is lost.

What happens to lists and tables?

Lists keep a • bullet, a dash or no marker, as you choose, and numbered lists keep their numbers. Tables become columns lined up with spaces.

Can I use it to count words?

Yes. It counts the words and characters of the plain text, so the Markdown symbols aren’t counted. Front matter and %%comments%% are left out of the count, as they are of the text.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The text is made in your browser and isn’t uploaded or stored.

Does it cost anything?

No. It’s free, with no account and no sign-up.
